When violence surrounds you

Great piece in the LA Times this week about student life at schools in violent neighborhoods.

I filled in at one of the schools mentioned for about six weeks, and the palpable anger in the air is indescribable. At my first school, described in the "Requiem for Nick" entry, there was a lot of hopelessness. At the other school, it was just open anger and hostility towards teachers and other staff.

Services are never equal to the need for services at these kinds of schools, which exist throughout the United States. What happens to these young people? What does their future hold? Where do they do and what do they do after graduation? No one wants to talk about that.
